1: Repenting before dawn
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُون
The pious and Allah-fearing will be in gardens and springs (Quran 51:15)
One of their qualities which leads them to Jannah is to pray for forgiveness before dawn. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran:
وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُون
and in the hours before dawn they used to pray for forgiveness (Quran 51:18)
Despite worshipping Allah Ta’ala at night, the pious still ask for forgiveness because of their appreciation of Allah Ta’ala’s Majesty and acknowledging their own shortcomings.
2: Spending in charity
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُون
The pious and Allah-fearing will be in gardens and springs (Quran 51:15)
One of their qualities which leads them to Jannah is to spend in charity. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran:
وَفِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُوم
and in their wealth, there was a right for one who asks and for one who is deprived (Quran 51:19)
They spend in charity on the poor who ask and they also search for those who are poor but do not ask. By Allah Ta’ala referring to it as a right means that it is not a favour to the poor, but a duty on the wealthy.
3: Fear of Allah Ta’ala’s punishment
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُون
The pious and Allah-fearing will be in gardens and springs (Quran 51:15)
One of the qualities that will let them enjoy Jannah will be that they used to fear Allah Ta’ala’s punishment even while they were among their families and living their lives in the world:
قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِين
They will say, Indeed we were afraid (of Allah‘s punishment) when we were among our family (Quran 52:26)
As a result, Allah Ta’ala will save them from what they fear, namely punishment in Hell.
4: Asking for Jannah
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَعِيم
Of course, the Allah-fearing will be in gardens and bliss (Quran 52:17)
One of the qualities that will let them enjoy Jannah will be that they used to ask Allah Ta’ala for Jannah and beg to be saved from Hell:
إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ
We used to pray to Him before. (Quran 52:28)
The hadith assures us,
مَنْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَتْ الْجَنَّةُ اللَّهُمَّ أَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَنْ اسْتَجَارَ مِنْ النَّارِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَتْ النَّارُ اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْهُ مِنْ النَّارِ
“Whoever asks Allah for Jannah three times, Jannah will say: “O Allah, enter him into Jannah.” Whoever seeks protection from Hell three times, Hell will say: “O Allah, save him from Hell.” (Tirmidhi 2572)
5: Focus in Salaah
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُون
Success is really attained by the believer (Quran 23:1)
The Noble Quran then outlines certain qualities of the believer and then says that those who have these qualities:
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُون الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون
Those are the inheritors, who will inherit Firdaus (Jannah). They will be there forever (Quran 23:10-11)
One of these qualities is to concentrate and focus in Salaah. Allah Ta’ala says,
الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُون
who concentrate their attention in humbleness when offering Salaah (Quran 23:2)
They do not make any unnecessary movements in Salaah. Their hearts, minds and bodies are calm and attentive.
6. Avoiding futile things
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُون
Success is really attained by the believer (Quran 23:1)
The Noble Quran then outlines certain qualities of the believer and then says that those who have these qualities:
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُون الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون
Those are the inheritors, who will inherit Firdaus (Jannah). They will be there forever (Quran 23:10-11)
One of these qualities is to turn away from falsehood, which includes ascribing partners to Allah Ta’ala and sin, and any words or deeds that are of no benefit. Allah Ta’ala outlines this in the Noble Quran,
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُون
and who keep themselves away from futile things. (Quran 23:3)
7. Paying Zakaat
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُون

One of these qualities is to pay one’s Zakaat. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran,

and those who pay the Zakaat (Quran 23:4)
8. Protecting one’s chastity
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُون
Success is really attained by the believer (Quran 23:1)
The Noble Quran then outlines certain qualities of the believer and then says that those who have these qualities:
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُون الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون
Those are the inheritors, who will inherit Firdaus (Jannah). They will be there forever (Quran 23:10-11)
One of the qualities that will lead a person to Jannah is to abstain from sex outside marriage, as well as all other unlawful sexual behavior such as homosexuality. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran,
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُون
and who guard their private parts, (Quran 23:5)
It is praiseworthy and a means of reward to fulfill one’s passion with one’s spouse within the sacred institution of marriage.
9. Fulfilling trusts and pledges
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُون

The Noble Quran then outlines certain qualities of the believer and then says that those who have these qualities:
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُون الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون
Those are the inheritors, who will inherit Firdaus (Jannah). They will be there forever (Quran 23:10-11)
Among the qualities that will lead a person to Jannah is that when he is entrusted with something, he does not betray that trust, and when he makes a promise or a pledge, he is true to his word. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran,
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُون
and (success is attained) by those who honestly look after their trusts and pledges (Quran 23:8)
10. Protecting Salaah
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُون
Success is really attained by the believer (Quran 23:1)
The Noble Quran then outlines certain qualities of the believer and then says that those who have these qualities:
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُون الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون
Those are the inheritors, who will inherit Firdaus (Jannah). They will be there forever (Quran 23:10-11)
Among the qualities that will lead a person to Jannah is that he strictly guards his Salaah by offering them at the correct times and in the best manner possible. Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran,
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَوَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُون
and who consistently observe their prayers (Quran 23:9)
11. Don’t harm others
The Noble Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam outlined certain qualities which will take one to Jannah.
اضْمَنُوا لِي سِتًّا مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَضْمَنْ لَكُمُ الْجَنَّةَ
Guarantee me you will do six things and I guarantee you Jannah. (Musnad Ahmad 22251)
Among these qualities is not to harm anyone. The hadith commands,
وَكُفُّوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ
prevent your hands from harming others. (Ahmad)
12. Speak the truth
The Noble Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam outlined certain qualities which will take one to Jannah.
اضْمَنُوا لِي سِتًّا مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَضْمَنْ لَكُمُ الْجَنَّةَ
Guarantee me you will do six things and I guarantee you Jannah. (Musnad Ahmad 22251)
Among these qualities is to speak the truth. The hadith commands,
اصْدُقُوا إِذَا حَدَّثْتُمْ
Whenever you speak, say the truth. (Ahmad)
13. Building a Masjid
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam has promised Jannah for anyone who builds a Masjid.
مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدًا لِلَّهِ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِثْلَهُ
Whoever builds a masjid seeking by it the Pleasure of Allah, Allah will build for him a similar place in Jannah. (Bukhari 439)
14. Seeking knowledge
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam has promised Jannah for anyone who makes an effort to gain knowledge.
مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا سَهَّلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ
Whoever walks a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Jannah. (Muslim 2699)
15. Calling out the Athan
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam has promised Jannah for anyone who calls the people to Salaah with the Athan.
مَنْ أَذَّنَ ثِنْتَىْ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ
Whoever calls the Athan for twelve years, he will be guaranteed Paradise. (Ibn Majah 728)
16. Learning the Names of Allah Ta’ala
The hadith promises Jannah for anyone who learns and acts on the beautiful Names of Allah Ta’ala.
لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةٌ وَتِسْعُونَ اسْمًا، مِائَةٌ إِلاَّ وَاحِدًا، لاَ يَحْفَظُهَا أَحَدٌ إِلاَّ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise. (Bukhari 6410)
17. Spread the greeting of Salaam
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam gave four easy actions to practice on which will gain one entrance into Jannah. He guaranteed that anyone who carried them out,
تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلاَمٍ
You will enter Paradise with peace (Ibn Majah 3251)
One of these actions is to spread the greeting of Salaam.
أَفْشُوا السَّلاَمَ
Spread (the greeting of) Salam (Ibn Majah)
18. Feed people
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam gave four easy actions to practice on which will gain one entrance into Jannah. He guaranteed that anyone who carried them out,
تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلاَمٍ
You will enter Paradise with peace (Ibn Majah 3251)
One of these actions is to feed people.
وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ
feed others (Ibn Majah)
19. Join family relations
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam gave four easy actions to practice on which will gain one entrance into Jannah. He guaranteed that anyone who carried them out,
تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلاَمٍ
You will enter Paradise with peace (Ibn Majah 3251)
One of these actions is to join family ties and keep them strong.
وَصِلُوا الأَرْحَامَ
Join family ties (Ibn Majah)
20. Night worship
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam gave four easy actions to practice on which will gain one entrance into Jannah. He guaranteed that anyone who carried them out,
تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلاَمٍ
You will enter Paradise with peace (Ibn Majah 3251)
One of these actions is to spend a portion of the night awake in the worship of Allah Ta’ala. Mujahid rahimahullah says that the pious seldom miss Tahajjud (night Salaah). Anas ibn Malik radhiallahu anhuma says that this night worship even covers the period between Maghrib and Esha.
وَصَلُّوا بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ
and pray during the night when people are sleeping (Ibn Majah)
21. Visiting the sick
من عاد مريضًا أو زار أخًا له في الله، ناداه منادٍ، بأن طبت، وطاب ممشاك، وتبوأت من الجنة منزلاً
Whosoever visits a sick person or his brother to seek the Pleasure of Allah, an announcer calls out: You have done good, may your walking be blessed, and you have prepared an abode in Jannah. (Tirmidhi 2008)
22. Caring for daughters
مَنْ كُنَّ لَهُ ثَلَاثُ بَنَاتٍ يُؤْوِيهِنَّ وَيَرْحَمُهُنَّ وَيَكْفُلُهُنَّ وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ الْبَتَّةَ قَالَ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ كَانَتْ اثْنَتَيْنِ قَالَ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ اثْنَتَيْنِ قَالَ فَرَأَى بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ أَنْ لَوْ قَالُوا لَهُ وَاحِدَةً لَقَالَ وَاحِدَةً
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “Whoever has three daughters and he cares for them, he is merciful to them, and he clothes them, then Paradise is certainly required for him.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, what if he has only two?” The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam replied, “Even two.” Some people thought that if they had said to him one, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam would have said even one. (Musnad Ahmad 13835)
